Hoosns v0.8: a Windows (domain) name server of sorts.

Hi,
One day I realised my life would be made much easier if I had a quick simple DNS server available on my work laptop (which runs MS Windows XP). Ideally this DNS server could be setup very quickly, without too much complexity and realistically would only need to be a subset of a "proper" DNS server. In the situations where this DNS server would be used, only clients would query it for a handful of name/IP4 mappings. Interaction with other DNS servers (zones transfers/authority/forwarding etc...) would be irrelevant. In effect all I needed was a programme that could serve the equivalent of a hosts file on port UDP 53.

Thus, Hoosns was born.

Hoosns looks to a "hosts" file and serves the name/IP mappings on port UDP 53 to clients who request that information.

Hoosns is NOT fully RFC compliant, it only supports IPv4, IPv6 and PTR records. However, it can be useful in test/lab/home situations where partial DNS services are required.

Hoosns is freely available. You can download it here:

Hoosns has limitations. If you need help using it, or have a bug to report please send an email to hoosns@ this domain name .com.

Alternatively, if you can code, here is the VB6 source code:

Or visit hoosns at Sourceforge.net
